Semiconductor
Equipment Manufacturer Uses Bentek Power Distribution
Rack Design to Reduce Labor Costs by 70 Percent
 |
|
| |
Based in San Jose,
Calif., this company’s complex deposition, planarization
and processing systems used for semiconductor manufacturing
consistently win ‘Top Product’ awards for
delivering the best value. The company’s virtual
factory model focuses on standardizing subassemblies across
product lines while reducing operating costs, overhead
and lead times. Yet its complex product configurations
often have many variations. One solution was to design
common power distribution systems components. For this,
the company needed a partner with extensive experience
in power design, in addition to a reputation for producing
custom products in record time.
Bentek designed a Mutiple Power Distribution (MPD) rack
that was based on a flexible power bus instead of the
more common point-to-point wiring. The new MPD not only
reduced wiring by 10:1, but also reduced materials costs
by 30 percent, labor costs by 70 percent, and overall
production costs by 50 percent.
Functioning as the client’s virtual factory, Bentek
was able to provide increased supply chain visibility
to reduce inventory. And by performing design and build
activities simultaneously, Bentek reduced production time.
Today, Bentek continues to provide the semiconductor equipment
manufacturer with design and manufacturing expertise for
fluid and pneumatic assemblies, electronic mehcnaical
assemblies, frame integration and power distribution design
services.

Applied
MicroStructures Free to Focus on R&D with Bentek as
its “Virtual Factory”
 |
|
|
| |
As orders increased
for Applied MicroStructures' new MVD-100 Molecular Vapor
Deposition (MVD) System, the company found it increasing
difficult to ramp up manufacturing. The MVD-100 does not
lend itself to volume production. This extremely precise
system deposits nano-scale organic films on a broad variety
of substrates, including silicon wafers, metals, polymers,
glass plastics and other surfaces. Its must be manufactured
with processes that are just as precise. In addition,
new custom-driven applications often required Applied
MicroStructures (AMST) to modify the system design “on
the fly.”
AMST develops and markets specialized process equipment
to address the critical technologies in the growing nano-tech
/ MEMS / MST / BioMEMS industries. To meet customer demands,
this Silicon Valley-based OEM decided to implement a “virtual
factory” model. But first, it had to find a Electronic
Manufacturing Services (EMS) provider with a highly disciplined
manufacturing system and design engineering support that
could accommodate both volume production and highly complex
engineering prototypes.
For just the right mix of engineering design and contract
manufacturing services, AMST turned to Bentek. To ensure
seamless service, Bentek provided program management,
manufacturing engineering, supply chain management, quality
systems and logistics capabilities. As their strategic
partnership developed and the alliance proved to be extremely
successful for both companies, Bentek integrated its business
processes with AMST's operations.
As a result of its partnership with Bentek, AMST has significantly
reduced production costs, thus making additional resources
available for the research and development efforts needed
to develop new nano device applications in MEMS, MOEMS,
Bio-MEMS, and micro fluidics. In addition, the company
reports that its customer satisfaction ratings are at
an all time high due to improved delivery time and high
quality of its flagship MVD-100 System.

National
Laboratory Relies on Bentek for “Impossible to Find”
Obsolete Parts, Cost-Effective Design
 |
|
| |
This OEM conducts
advanced research and development for a wide range of
homeland security and national defense projects. Of course,
efficacy and safety are critical. The Laboratory needed
a contract manufacturer with program management capabilities
sophisticated enough to handle the production of its high-complexity,
low-volume electromechanical subassemblies. In addition,
it required its partner to design and fabricate the obsolete
parts used in an older security system. Much to the amazement
of our client, through our extremely creative procurement
strategies, we were able to find many of the ‘impossible-to-find”
parts. |

Savi
Technology Partners with Bentek for Complex, Time-Critical
System Assembly
 |
|
|
| |
Savi Technology,
a leader in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and
Automatic Identification and Data Collection (AIDC) solutions,
has extremely short design cycles for new product introductions.
In order to focus its resources on the crucial research
and development programs that would keep it ahead of its
competitors, Savi decided to outsource manufacturing.
Savi’s manufacturing partner would be faced with
a highly complex logistical challenge. The production
process requires custom tuning and test verification of
radio frequencies between the readers to satellite modems.
There are multiple configurations. And many of the customer-driven
new product applications have time-critical delivery deadlines,
despite the fact that Savi’s end-customers often
wait until the last minute to release specific configuration
details.
Bentek proved it had the flexible and disciplined business
model its OEM customer needed and was well-equipped to
meet the Savi challenge,. A Bentek senior program manager
with advanced skills in managing new product introductions
solved Savi’s highly variable, time-critical forecasting
variations. By using a cost-optimized materials management
strategy and a complex integrated SCM system, the manager
ensured that the right parts were always available when
required. Savi credits its ability to stay in front of
the cost/performance curve to Bentek’s flexibile
manufacturing services.
